About Portable Swamp Coolers
Swamp coolers, also known as evaporative coolers or simply air coolers, use water evaporation and a fan to cool air. Fresh air is drawn through moist pads where it is then cooled when evaporated, and then circulated with a fan. Swamp coolers get their name because they add moisture to the air and raise the overall humidity. They work well in dry climates that are under 50% in humidity.
• Pros: Consumes only 1/4 to 1/10 the electricity that a portable air conditioner does. Not as expensive to buy. Does not require outside venting.
• Cons: Only works in dry climates with humidity under 50%. Can only cool the air about 15°F. Water tank can be breeding ground for bacteria and mold.
